If you are under 21, unfortunately you won’t be able to rent a car, even if you hold a valid license, due to insurance restrictions.

For luxury car rentals or specialty vehicles, the minimum age is often higher – usually 25 years old. Infinity Rent A Car follows industry standards: we require renters to be 21+ for regular cars, and 25+ for premium/luxury models. This is both for safety and insurance coverage reasons.

If you are between 21 and 24, in some cases a young driver surcharge may apply (a small additional fee) as this age group is considered higher risk by insurers 11 . We will inform you at the time of booking if any such fee applies. We strive to keep this reasonable, and it may be waived for certain promotions or if you have a clean driving record.

Remember, age requirements are about the driver, not the passenger. So if you’re under 21 but traveling with someone older who can rent and drive, that person should be the primary renter. Also note, additional drivers also need to meet the age requirement.

Can I drive in Qatar with my international or foreign driver’s license?

Yes, visitors can drive in Qatar with a foreign driver’s license for a limited period, provided you also have an International Driving Permit (IDP) in many cases. Here’s how it works:

• Tourists (Non-GCC countries): If you’re visiting Qatar on a tourist visa, you are allowed to drive using your home country’s license for up to 7 days from your entry date. However, to continue driving beyond that (up to 6 months), you are legally required to have an International Driving Permit in addition to your license 4 . Most car rental companies, including us, will ask for an IDP if your stay is more than a week, to comply with the law. Essentially, an IDP is strongly recommended for all tourists – it’s an inexpensive document you obtain in your home country before travel.

• GCC Nationals: If you’re from a GCC country (e.g., Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, etc.), you can drive in Qatar with your GCC license without needing an IDP, thanks to license reciprocity within the Gulf Cooperation Council 12 . So, a tourist from Dubai or Riyadh can rent and drive with their local license as long as it’s valid.

• Qatar Residents: If you have obtained residency in Qatar (have a Qatar ID), you are expected to get a Qatari driver’s license. Typically, once you have a residence permit, there’s a grace period of a few months where an IDP might still be accepted, but it’s best to convert to a Qatari license as soon as possible. We cannot rent to Qatar residents on their foreign license beyond the initial grace period or 6 months.

• International Driving Permit (IDP): An IDP is basically a translated booklet of your license. It’s used in conjunction with your original license (you must carry both). It is mandatory for most tourists in Qatar to have an IDP 4 , especially if your visit is longer than a week or your license is not in English/Arabic. Driving without one when required could result in fines or issues if stopped by police or if trying to claim insurance.

So, if you’re planning to rent a car in Qatar and your license is from another country, get an IDP before your trip (unless you’re from a GCC nation). It ensures you’re 100% legal to drive and it makes the rental process smoother. One more note: your license must be valid (not expired) and have your photo on it. If your home license is expired or a temporary learner’s permit, that won’t be accepted. Also, ensure the IDP you get is the official one sanctioned by your automobile association; there are some fake “international license” scams out there – only the genuine IDP (usually issued by entities like AAA in the USA, etc.) is recognized.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car, or can I use cash/debit?

Having a credit card is strongly recommended for renting a car in Qatar. All major car rental companies, including Infinity, require a credit card in the renter’s name to secure the booking and the security deposit. Here’s why and how it works:

1. When you rent a car, we take a security deposit hold on your credit card (not a charge, just a hold) for the duration of the rental. This deposit (amount varies by car, say QAR 1,000-3,000) 13 is to cover any incidental charges like traffic fines, minor damages, or fuel discrepancies. When you return the car in good condition, the hold is released and nothing is charged. A credit card is ideal for this because the hold can be placed and removed electronically without actually deducting money from your account.

1. Credit Card: Required for the security deposit. It must be under the renter’s name. We accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. The card should have enough available credit for the deposit hold. We do not generally accept someone else’s card for your deposit (for fraud prevention and accountability reasons).

1. Debit Card: Most of the time, debit cards are not accepted for the deposit hold, because a debit actually pulls funds from your bank account. Some companies avoid this because it complicates refunds. At Infinity, we usually insist on a credit card for the deposit. However, for the rental payment itself, you could use a debit card or cash.

1. Cash: We do allow cash as a form of payment for the rental fees at the counter if that’s easier for you – but not for the security deposit. In certain cases, for long-term rentals or if a customer has no credit card, we might take a cash deposit (the amount might be higher and it will be refunded via bank transfer or cash at the end). This is handled case-by-case and generally not preferred. It’s much easier for you and us to use a credit card for the deposit.
